MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT FEMINISM
“Feminism” has become a loud word now. Quite a lot of people
feel it as overrated because of the unnecessary fuss that’s associated to it.
It is about gender equality and definitely not about women hating men. Today I shall proudly tell 'my' definition of
feminism. “You don’t have to be scared to question and get what you want and
what you deserve. Always have a voice for yourself". There are huge number of misconceptions about
feminism and feminists. Top most are:
1.
Feminists hate men
Guys! We don’t. We have our fathers, brothers and other men
who stand as pillars of strength for us. Why do you think we will hate men?
2.
Feminists think they are superior than men
Honestly guys, No! We are all
human beings. Men have XY chromosome and women have XX chromosome. We are
different genders but our all values are one and the same. We don’t want to
dominate the other gender .There are certain things designed to be done only by
the men and there are things where women can be good at. We value your
existence guys. No gender can be superior than the other.
3.
Feminists are aggressive
If having an opinion makes you ‘aggressive’,
then yes we are. We don’t get hesitated to tell what we feel. Most of the times,
people feel that we are ‘arguing and fighting’, when we are merely expressing our feelings. If
you are someone who gets intimidated by this kind of persona, you better work
on your communication skills.
4.
Feminists are always working women only
For someone to be a feminist there
is no criteria that they need to be financially independent. There is no
connection at all. A home maker can be a feminist too. Some of our grandmothers
despite of knowing what feminism means, showed no bias while educating their
sons and daughters and henceforth proved to be feminists.
5.
Feminists are strong and brave
No! Not many of us. There are
women who are extremely scared of lizards, who jump off their seat while watching
horror films and still be feminists. Is there somewhere written that you need
to let go off all your fears to be a feminist?
6.
Only women can be feminists
Benedict Cumberbatch, Jason Mamoa,
Willsmith, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Daniel creig, Aamir Khan etc are some of
the men who believe in the idea of feminism and are feminists themselves.
7.
Feminists don’t believe in love and marriage
We have huge respect for the
institution of marriage and we believe in happy and stress free relationships.
We do fall in love with men, and we are not scared to break the stereotype “Women
can’t propose first”.
8.
Feminism is just a trend
Yes I agree that there are girls
out there who claim to be feminists just to sound cool and fashionable. They proudly say "Future is Female", but
they fail to get into the depth to understand the real meaning behind it.
Luckily things are changing now. Women are getting to the better places in the world. Finally, let us take what we deserve. Happy Women's day all!
